Spruce Lake's retreat, youth camp and outdoor education ministries serve over 25,000 people annually here in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania.

Seasonal Employment Positions:

(1) Day Camp Manager:Full-time during summer months, part-time hours in Spring and Fall. Responsible to the Director of Operations.
The Day Camp Manager will lead Spruce Lake's Day Camp program at the Retreat Center, helping to create and implement the daily program. This person will supervise the day camp counselors, assist in problem-solving regarding camper issues and help recruit, hire and train Day Camp summer staff. The manager will also be responsible for leading large-group games, biblical devotionals, off-site camper excursions and staff outings.

Key personal requirements for this position include (a) a strong Christian commitment and life-walk that expresses itself in behavior that is beyond reproach, honest and intentionally Christ-like; (b) spiritual maturity for taking initiative in using the resources available for growing and encouraging others to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ; (c) Emotional and social maturity for relating well and cooperating with others in the camp community; (d) a commitment to overall good health and fitness for meeting the demands of the assignment.

(2) Day Camp Counselor: 10-12 weeks in the summer months. Responsible to the Day Camp Manager.
The Day Camp Counselor will be at least 19 years of age, have at least one year of college or work experience upon graduation from high school (the exception being former Spruce Lake Wilderness Camp counselors and Wilderness Camp support staff of proven ability.) The Day Camp counselor must possess high social and spiritual maturity for positively and safely caring for the campers entrusted to them.

This person is primarily responsible for the safety, supervision and spiritual nurture of day campers ages 5-11). The work entails, among other things, (a) the ability to enthusiastically model a Christ-like way of life, (b) the sensitivity required to be attuned to the social, spiritual, physical, mental and emotional needs of their campers; (c) the thoughtful supervison and management of campers in accordance with written and verbal policies and instructions set forth by Spruce Lake management; (d) knowing how to generate fun and interesting things as a camper unit during unstructured time.

(3) Pool Manager: Term generally runs Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend when the pool is open for guests. Responsible to the Director of Operations.

The Pool Manager is responsible for the safety of swimmers, supervising all waterfront operations, and leading lifeguards at the Retreat Center. This person shall possess the maturity and skills needed for effective pool management and lifeguarding, and must be certified in Lifeguarding/CPR skills. The reliable Pool Manager will also have exemplary relational and organizational skills.

As Pool Manager, this person will, among other things, (a) create and facilitate the lifeguarding schedule so all waterfront activities are properly staffed; (b) include themselves in the lifeguard rotation; (c) clean, maintain and monitor the pool, the pool showers and overall pool area; monitor and oversee the paddle boats at the lake and keep the miniature golf course free of debris.

Year-round Positions:

Head Cook:Full-time, year-round position, responsible to the Food Service Director.
The Head Cook must be at least 21 years of age, and is responsible for preparing and serving meals provided at the Retreat Center, making recommendations for menu planning and for being thoroughly familiar with procuring, receiving and inventorying all foods and supplies. The Head Cook can be called upon to supervise other food service staff and kitchen volunteers, and helps to ensure open communication and teamwork, along with maintaining high morale. When the Food Service Manager is absent, the Head Cook assumes the role of leader and authority. The Head Cook is also responsible for maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness in both food preparation and staff hygiene.

As Head Cook, this person's primary tasks will be to (a) become familiar with all applicable food service regulations and American Camping Association standards and to assure Spruce Lake's compliance with them; (2) Prepare and serve meals in a timely fashion and as set forth on the weekly menu, while assuring that the freshest food and Spruce Lake's high standards of quality are met; (3) be responsive to specific dietary requests from guests; (4) Operate all food service areas in compliance with the state health code and Spruce Lake's policies/procedures; (5) Plan menus, place food orders, record inventory, keep all work areas clean, plus perform all other related tasks as assigned by the Food Service Manager.

Key personal requirements for this position include (a) a strong Christian commitment and life-walk that expresses itself in behavior that is beyond reproach, honest and intentionally Christ-like toward all guests and staff; (b) work experience in food service operation for large groups; (c) ServSafe certification (which may be earned within the first six months at Spruce Lake); (d) Basic First-Aid and CPR certifications (which may be earned within the first six months at Spruce Lake); (e) the understanding and practice of a team spirit that expresses itself by seeking to serve and respect others, mutual admonition, encouragement and accountability, and respect for authority; (f) the willingness to embrace and support the strategic statements of Spruce Lake.

Internship Program
Interns work alongside Spruce Lake staff in their specific areas of ministry. Along with serving side by side with staff, interns will participate in other aspects of community life - potluck dinners, Bible studies and "outside of work" recreational, social or educational activities.
